I Hear a Rhapsody - Newfoundland - The Ireland of Canada
... In Memorium ...
Song without words
almost.
Working through musical grief
loss of parents
Newfoundland
the house where I was born
the wild rose gone to thorn
the howling winds forlorn beneath the window of the room where I was born
In my memory river flow onto the sea
as time to eternity
those wild winds will have their say as Christ on the judgment day
The foghorn’s mournful warning on the bay
wild rose of the Avalon
a moment’s storm and then you’re gone
beneath the window of the room where I was born
Her first born
in winter time
river flow onto the sea
noble river wait for me
as time to eternity
flow in my memory beneath the window of the house where I was born

...
A song without many words... written after the passing of my parents in my native Newfoundland. My sister Elizabeth and I had begun life together with them and in the last six summers of their lives we spent happy peaceful times together---life had gone full circle, ending as it had begun, with the four of us.
The melody keeps surfacing to cheer me amid the beauty of Newfoundland by the ocean- and the in memoriam, the only spoken-sung words---he has slipped away to the stars----to listen to the angels play on classical guitars and glockenspeil and sitars and feel the wind upon his face, somewhere out there in cosmic space. A curtain of snow was at the window, and my mother in grief said to me- 'he never said an unkind word to me in sixty-eight years".. He has slipped away to the stars.
